Atmel sells a very inexpensive demo board called the Butterfly. You might check at smileymicro.com as they have a number of interesting things based on the ATMega169 based Butterfly. Get the book on programming they sell. It's a fun read and will get the gears moving again. I spent years in management and now that I'm retired I'm having a ball with this stuff.

I would love to see something similar, but for a straight up AVR. I.E. How to build a AVR board and program it to blink some LEDs, etc. I would love to get started with the AVR, but find it a little overwhelming trying to figure out exactly what I need.

@IntellectArsenal
I was at about the same spot as you a number of months ago with wanting to get back into electronics but without any sort of basic project to work on. I picked up a arduino board because it was cheap and there's tons of tutorials out for it and it can be used basically as the brains for simple robots.
I'd say check out the website as well as the forum to see some of the crazy stuff people are doing with it http://www.arduino.cc/

I recently discovered your site, probably through a link on BoingBoing. I haven't dabbled with electronics since college (a really long time ago) and am getting the itch to experiment again. Your article is well written, with sources well cited and linked, but...why do I need a microcontroller? Or more to the point, what can I do with a microcontroller?

I guess maybe I am not your target audience...:-)
