Thanks for the interesting sound examples and comparisons! :-)

Just a few things:

"PWM sound is also called PCM or pulse code modulation" -
Not true at all. PCM is like ordinary .wav data.

Berni: "This is actually how MIDI works, playing samples at different speeds" -
Truly incredible! MIDI doesn't do any sound.

Good luck in the future! :-)

Have you considered using PWM on each line of the 4 bit R2R DAC to extend it's resolution? Given enough clock speed it should be simple enough.

I had some problems with MIDI input, only MIDI output worked.

Anyway for those that want a good software for MIDI and audio check this http://reaper.fm/feat-ss.php
Very nicely made piece of software that has a free trial of 30 days but is still functional afterwards it just displays a "buy me" message

Well use it as a MIDI instrument, but i cant seam to get the PC to synthesize stuff it gets in to the midi port.

Berni,

What would you control on the PC with the MIDI accelerometer?

I believe there's a typo in "Consider that decimal 128 is 1000000 in binary.". Should be an additional 0 there, right?

Oh and one idea i had is to try and connect that accelerometer to a PCs MIDI port.

Another useful article for the series, although I must admit a few of the terms used were unfamilar to me.

One of the ideas I've had for using sound is to use it to provide a non-visual user interface by way of sampled speech.

I've got a "spy pen camera" that uses such an interface--I blogged about it http://words.rancidbacon.com/sneaky-spy-camera-pen-2007-02-28-03-45.html and the post includes a link to the (rather poor) sound.

The principle advantage is the ability to have an interface that doesn't require the space a LCD would take up. Plus it's just kinda cool. :-)
